Losses in a centrifugal pump are classified in to following types:
Leakage losses - Caused by liquid flowing in wear rings, inter-stages, mechanical seals, glands & balancing devices, etc..
Mechanical losses - Mechanical losses due to the bearings, shaft seals ,gear depending on pump type.
Hydraulic losses - Losses due to the conversion of kinetic energy in to pressure energy, due to friction in casing as well as recirculation of liquid
Friction losses - The disk friction is due to the shroud and hub of the impeller because it rotates in a fluid filled pump casing. The size of the disc friction depends primarily on the speed the impeller diameter as well as the dimensions of the pump housing
Impeller losses - Shock losses at inlet and outlet of the impeller
