Function of bearings in a pump

Function of Bearings

The pump bearings support the hydraulic loads imposed on the impeller, the mass of the shaft and impeller, and the loads due to the shaft coupling or belt drive.

Pump bearings keep the shaft axial end movement and on the side (lateral) deflection within acceptable limits for the impeller and shaft mechanical seal. The lateral deflection is most influenced by the shaft stiffness and bearing clearance.

The hydraulic loads consist of hydrostatic and momentum forces from the fluid. Forces on the impeller are mostly in to two types:
1) Axial load
2) Radial load
